water-heater-not-working

Hot water heaters are an integral component of a well-functioning home providing hot water for a safe and comfortable home. Until you are faced with a cold shower or no water at all a hot water heater does not receive much thought but without it, you are in trouble. Spotting the early signs of hot water heater failure can save you from costly damages as well as witnessing a flood emergency in your home.

Common Signs

Here are some common indicators that the hot water heater in your home is going bad. If the hot water heater is nearing its intended life span of 8-12 years and is leaking from either the inlet valves or from the tank, it may mean a new hot water heater is needed. Water heaters are installed with magnesium-style anode rods. Over time these rods wear out causing increased rust and corrosion causing the heater’s components to break down and leak. Other signs are you may need a new hot water heater are inconsistent fluctuating water temperatures and a short supply of hot water for cooking, bathing, or washing clothes. If you are calling frequently for service because of low water pressure or discolored or foul-smelling water you may need to call a plumber.

Maintenance

Maintenance plays a big part in the life and functionality of your water heater. Testing the temperature/pressure valve will alert you of any issues. Water pressure that is too high or too low can create serious plumbing problems and can shorten the life span of your hot water heater. Yearly draining of the water tank to remove sediment buildup is recommended to remove unwanted mineral deposits and other debris. A more frequent draining schedule should be met if living in an area known to have hard water. Flushing will extend the tank’s life span and ensure the cleanest water is making its way to your faucets, showers, and appliances. Regular maintenance also includes insulating the hot and cold water pipes to reduce condensation and wrapping the tank in an insulation blanket helps prevent overall heat loss to the outside air. Insulation saves you money and shortens the time you will need to wait for hot water.

Types

Water heaters come in two different types. The most common hot water heaters are traditional heaters that include a holding tank for the water being stored and heated. When hot water is called for in the home hot water is transferred from the tank to faucets, showers and tubs, and appliances to provide hot water to meet your family’s needs. Tankless water heaters are less popular than traditional heaters but are gaining attention as they are more energy-efficient and cost-effective. These systems only heat the water that is needed and do not store water for future use. They are smaller in size so they can easily be installed in small spaces such as cabinets or closets making them real space savers. They are more expensive to purchase and install but they recoup that lighter outlay of cash quickly as they significantly lower heating bills.

Why Repair?

A struggling hot water heater causes unnecessary water waste as you must run the spigot for longer periods of time to get the temperature you are desiring. A poorly functioning heater will also generate higher than normal energy bills and in today’s economy no one can afford to waste money. Repairing your hot water heater will increase your water’s quality by eliminating rust and excess minerals and producing cleaner, better-tasting water. Having peace of mind is an additional benefit to repairing your heater by eliminating worries about power source issues or a possible bursting heater tank.

A failing water tank is a serious plumbing problem that requires ongoing maintenance to ensure it is operating efficiently and delivering clean, fresh water for all water-using appliances, baths, and kitchen needs. A struggling hot water heater will become a nuisance at best and a plumbing nightmare if early signs of failure are ignored and the hot water tank explodes. A yearly inspection and cleaning will lengthen the heater’s life and provide peace of mind you are providing healthy clean water to you and your family.
