Tankless water heaters work by heating water as needed, or on demand. This is the main difference between a traditional unit and a tankless, as the latter does not require the water to be stored. Some factors that can determine the rate of hot water delivery include the distance from the unit to the fixture or appliance as well as the preset temperature you have chosen.

Due to the many requirements for proper installation, Navien requires a qualified contractor to install their tankless water heaters. It is important to note that as per Navien policy, Navien products that are NOT installed by a qualified contractor will immediately void the warranty. A combination boiler is designed to heat a building by utilizing water in a similar way to a boiler. The main difference being that a combi has components and controls to heat domestic hot water (DHW) internally as required. In essence it is both a heating unit as well as a hot water heater unit all in one. Hence, how it gets its name of a combination boiler. These units not only save space but also on installation costs when compared to separate applications.

A combi boiler provides heat for a building as well as hot water simultaneously on demand. The heating portion of the unit utilizes water from the space heating system, which flows through a heat exchanger and out of the system like a traditional boiler. The hot water is circulated through an emitter, which transfers the heat from the water into the building. Next, the cooler water is returned to the boiler to be reheated once again. These units can heat water utilizing energy from sources such as natural gas, liquid propane, fuel oil as well as electricity.

A boiler contains just a few components, which make up its simplistic, yet efficient functionality. These include a heat exchanger, a burner, a circulator (pump), and a control system.
