Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters can be a great alternative to traditional tank-based water heating systems. Tankless heaters can prove to be more energy efficient and save you money over time on energy bills. There are many other added benefits to a Navien tankless water heater in your home such as unlimited hot water supply and more. Learn more about the benefits of tankless water heaters below:

Energy efficiency

Tankless water heaters only heat water when it is needed, which means they do not waste energy by keeping water hot in a tank. This can result in significant energy savings.

Unlimited hot water

Because tankless water heaters heat water on demand, they can provide an unlimited supply of hot water, as long as the unit is sized correctly for the home’s needs.

Longer lifespan

Tankless water heaters typically have a longer lifespan than traditional tank water heaters, which means they may require fewer repairs and replacements over time.

Space savings

Tankless water heaters are much smaller and more compact than traditional tank water heaters, which means they can be installed in smaller spaces or even outdoors.

Environmentally friendly

Tankless water heaters produce fewer emissions than traditional tank water heaters, which can make them a more environmentally friendly choice.

Tankless Heater FAQs

Tankless water heaters work by heating water as needed, or on demand. This is the main difference between a traditional unit and a tankless, as the latter does not require the water to be stored. When a demand for hot water occurs in your home, the unit utilizes a burner and heat exchanger in which the water passes through, heating the water instantly in real-time on its way to your appliances, faucets, and others!

It is worth switching to a tankless water heater if you are looking for a more efficient option. Tankless water heaters can save you money on your energy bill, and they can also have a longer lifespan than traditional water heaters.

Not relevant to the actual unit’s size, flow rate is the maximum GPM (gallons per minute) of hot water that can be supplied on-demand by factoring the temperature rise. The tankless unit itself controls the amount of flow to achieve consistent outlet temperature while in use.

The amount of time it takes to heat up the water, although on-demand, or often known as instantaneous, is dependent on a few factors. Once a tankless unit detects flow, the burner will need to reach the preset temperature before water flows towards its place of use. Luckily, this happens rather quickly, usually within five to ten seconds. Some factors that can determine the rate of hot water delivery include the distance from the unit to the fixture or appliance as well as the preset temperature you have chosen.

Since tankless units do not have a storage tank like traditional units, they continually heat water once they detect water flow. As a result, as long as there is a demand for hot water from either a faucet, fixture, or appliance that utilizes it, it will continue to heat water for as long as the source requires it.

Navien tankless water heaters have a multitude of controls and features that ensure operation safely. In the case of an issue, the unit will detect the abnormality and automatically turn off the unit followed by an error code that will be displayed on the unit. To perform a unit reset, press the RESET button located on the front control panel. On newer units, the reset button is labeled as a return arrow. After following these steps, the unit will attempt to restart and may resume operation. If a problem persists that does not allow for proper operation, you will be notified via the ERROR code once again. It is important to note that if at any time an error code appears on the unit, a Navien service contractor should verify the proper set up and operation of the unit.

Tankless water heater technology is complex and requires the proper knowledge and experience of plumbing professionals including gas line sizing, water flow calculations, venting requirements, and others. Due to the many requirements for proper installation, Navien requires a qualified contractor to install their tankless water heaters. It is important to note that as per Navien policy, Navien products that are NOT installed by a qualified contractor will immediately void the warranty. For proper installation under warranty, it is best to contact your trusted, Navien certified contractor.

A combination boiler is designed to heat a building by utilizing water in a similar way to a boiler. The main difference being that a combi has components and controls to heat domestic hot water (DHW) internally as required. In essence it is both a heating unit as well as a hot water heater unit all in one. Hence, how it gets its name of a combination boiler. These units not only save space but also on installation costs when compared to separate applications.

A combi boiler provides heat for a building as well as hot water simultaneously on demand. The heating portion of the unit utilizes water from the space heating system, which flows through a heat exchanger and out of the system like a traditional boiler. When hot water is required via a faucet or appliance that requires it, the water flows through another heat exchanger (DHW), which is diverted through a valve to the source and continually heats the water until it is no longer needed. At that point, the unit will continue to supply space heat.

Within a combi boiler is a heat exchanger that separates the space heating portion of heating flow from the hot water flow, thus being isolated from each other. The only crossover that occurs is the unit’s use of the heat from the space heating exchanger, at a higher temperature, is transferred to the lower temperature water to aid in high-efficiency hot water delivery as needed.

A boiler is a heating unit that heats water, which is circulated throughout a pipe system in a building. The hot water is circulated through an emitter, which transfers the heat from the water into the building. Next, the cooler water is returned to the boiler to be reheated once again. These units can heat water utilizing energy from sources such as natural gas, liquid propane, fuel oil as well as electricity.

A boiler contains just a few components, which make up its simplistic, yet efficient functionality. These include a heat exchanger, a burner, a circulator (pump), and a control system. When the building in which the boiler has been installed begins to get cooler, a control system will trigger the boiler to start. The pump will begin first by circulating the water throughout the boiler, then the building. Next, the burner will ignite to heat the water. Lastly, the boiler control will maintain the set temperature that is required for application. Once the desired amount of heat is circulated throughout the building via the heated water, the boiler will turn itself off until the temperature requires it to do so again.

The lifespan of a boiler is determined by a few factors such as the quality of water that flows through the unit, how well it has been maintained over the years as well as how well the system is designed to work with the boiler. Depending on the unit, most Navien boilers have a 10-15 year residential warranty. When proper maintenance is performed on a well-designed system, a boiler can last up to 20 years, or sometimes more depending on the unit!
