Why Is Sewage Coming Up My Shower Drain?
Sounds like you have a stoppage or a blockage in your sewer system! Your sewer system consists of different sized piping that all connects and either drains to the city or to a septic tank. If you have a septic tank it is possible that it’s time for it to get pumped. Otherwise, you most likely have a blockage in one of your lines.
A blockage can consist of many things. Most commonly flushable wipes, tampons, paper towels or even too much toilet paper. Your sewer system is similar to a tree where your main line is the trunk and then it branches off to smaller lines to the kitchen and bathrooms. From there it branches off to each fixture, the toilet, shower, sink, etc. If you have a blockage somewhere in the line and your waste cannot go down the path it is supposed to, it can end up coming up through your shower drain because it has nowhere else to go.
The best thing you can do is call your local plumber and have them come clear your blockage and get everything draining properly.
Pro Tip:Check to see if you have a clean out (usually looks like a white pipe sticking out of the ground). It’s important to know the location of your clean out and if you don’t have one, consider getting one installed. Taking the cap off your cleanup can redirect the sewage to drain outside instead of inside your home.
